Issue
In an Ethernet Daisy Chain, will downstream meters still communicate if a meter loses power?
Product Line
PM8000, PM5500
Environment
PowerLogic meters with multiple Ethernet ports
Cause
Unlike a serial daisy chain, if a meter in an Ethernet Daisy Chain loses power, all devices downstream of the device will lose communications. This is due to the meter also containing a network switch which needs to remain powered in order for traffic to pass through.
Resolution
To ensure that there are no comms loss due to power outage on Ethernet devices, a UPS can be installed to ensure that the meter does not power off during a service interrupt.
For the maximum number of devices that can be cascaded (daisy chained) via the Ethernet port of a PM5500/PM8000, pleasre refer to FA234113.
