What is a Type 2 Surge Protection Device?

Product Line:
Surge Protective Devices (SPD's)

Resolution:

Type2:

Type 2 SPDs are designed for installation only on the load side of the main service overcurrent protective device (OCPD). While they may be physically located near the service entrance, they must be electrically connected downstream of the main breaker or fuse.

To properly protect a Type 2 SPD, it must be connected through an appropriately rated overcurrent protection device (typically a circuit breaker or fuse). The breaker size should be selected based on the following considerations:

1. Manufacturer Specifications

  • Refer to the SPD manufacturer’s datasheet or installation manual for the recommended breaker size or maximum allowable overcurrent protection.

2. Conductor Size and Lug Capacity

  • Verify the wire size and number of conductors that can be terminated at the SPD’s lugs.
  • Ensure the selected breaker allows for conductors that are within the SPD’s lug rating.
  • Example: If the SPD accepts 10 AWG–4 AWG wire, the breaker must be compatible with conductors in that range and or allowable number of conductors per lug.
