How to troubleshoot an Altivar Process Drive with an SCF1 (Motor Short Circuit) Error?

The drive is protected against short circuit between the output phases and from output phases to ground. When a short circuit is detected, the inverter indicates an error message SCF1

Causes

  • Short circuit at the inverter output.
  • Short circuit or earth fault in the motor or motor cable.

Remedies

  • Verify the cables connecting the drive to the motor, and the motor insulation (Megger test with the motor disconnected from the drive).
  • Verify motor nameplate data has been entered properly in the drive and that an autotune has been completed (when motor is at room temperature).
  • Go to Diagnostics menu and perform the IGBT test with motor when the motor is connected.  If Not OK, then disconnect the motor and perform the IGBT test w/o motor.
  • Reduce the switching frequency.
  • Connect a load reactor (output choke) between the drive and the motor.
  • Test the drive in an open loop mode (motor disconnected) to verify that the drive can operate without the error and generate balanced output voltages at several different speeds:
    • Disconnect motor from drive and deactivate Output Phase Loss [Complete settings] [Error/Warning handling] [Output phase loss],
    • Change Motor control type [Complete Settings,/Motor parameters to U/F VC 5pts
    • run the drive with no motor connect.
      • Check for balanced output voltages (phase to phase) at several speeds.

NOTE: the testing should only be performed by a qualified person.  Consult the Instruction Bulletins for the specific product for details including all caution and warning messages.
