How can cables be affected by harmonics?

Harmonics can cause something called the “skin effect” in which the cables resistance may increase.  Skin effect is a case where unequal flux linkages across the cross section of the cable causes the AC current to flow on the outer periphery of the conductor.  The cable can overheat and will eventually fail.
