End users application calls for XS1M12MB230 to sense a piece of metal in a safety application, moving directly away from touching the face until out of sensing range. The switch is not operating properly.

Mis-application. Do not use a proximity sensor in a safety circuit. Preferred movement of target is across the face of the sensor, not toward and away from.
