QED Switchboard NEMA Type 3R main characteristics
Product Line:
QED SWB
Environment:
Maintenance Support
Resolution:
As per UL891, our QED Switchboards NEMA Type 3R are "rainproof only", meaning it was tested only for falling rain, snow, or sleet (a combination of both). The intended use of Type 3R enclosure is for the outdoors to provide a degree of protection against falling rain, sleet, and external ice formation.
Additionally, UL50 calls for the definition of NEMA Type 3R as an enclosure constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt); to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to ingress of water (rain, sleet, and snow); and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure. It also provides a degree of protection against dripping and light splashing of non-corrosive liquids but considering that these enclosures may be ventilated.
Therefore, the NEMA Type 3R enclosure is not waterproof or watertight. This type of enclosure is rainproof only so in extreme weather conditions water may enter the equipment.
If looking specifically for a "watertight" Switchboard, it must be NEMA Type 4, 4X, 6, or 6P enclosure and unfortunately, Schneider Electric does not offer a Switchboard with this enclosure type.
