Cause
It is not possible to pass in the SMTP server credentials from the SMTP server configuration within ION/SPM/PME. There is no option to enter username and password in Reporting Configuration Manager when configuring the SMTP server. With PME8, a new module has been introduced for configuration in the Virtual ION Processor (VIP). The module is named the Email module and does allow an user to pass in SMTP server credentials. While not a substitute for users wanting to setup email report subscriptions, the Email module will replace the on alarm subscription functionality of report subscription. PME 8.2 has added support for authenticated email (SMTP) in report subscriptions, and this procedure need not be followed.
Resolution
Although it is not possible to directly configure ION/SPM/PME to interact with an SMTP server that requires authentication it is possible to set up a local SMTP server on the machine and route SMTP traffic to the desired SMTP server with the required authentication credentials.
In order to set up a local SMTP server you will need to first install IIS SMTP
To install IIS SMTP
For Windows 2003
1. Under Add/Remove Programs, choose to Add/Remove a Windows Component.
2. Choose IIS and SMTP, and install. You may need access to your operating system's install CD.
3. Reboot after installation.
For Windows 2008
1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Double click Programs and Features.
3. Click Turn Windows Features on and off. This will open the Server Manager.
4. Click Add Features.
5. Check SMTP Server then click Install.
After IIS SMTP is installed you will need to configure the local SMTP server to route to the desired SMTP server that requires authentication.
To setup IIS SMTP
For Windows 2003
1. Check whether the SMTP service is running. Right click on My Computer and select Manage.
2. In Computer Management expand Services and Applications.
3. Expand Internet Information Services and right click on Default SMTP Virtual Server and select Properties.
4. Select the Delivery tab and click the Advanced button.
5. In the Smart Host enter the IP Address or name of the SMTP server that requires authentication.
6. The fully qualified domain name will be pre populated with the name designated in the system properties.
7. Click on the Outbound Security tab to proceed with setting the SMTP server authentication.
For Windows 2008
1. Click Start -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager.
3. Expand <computername> and right click on SMTP Virtual Server and select Properties.
4. Select the Delivery tab then click the Advanced button.
5. In the Smart Host textbox enter the IP Address of your mail server and the Fully qualified domain name of the server listed in the Smart Host for the Fully-qualified domain name.
6. The fully qualified domain name will be pre populated with the name designated in the system properties.
7. Click on the Outbound Security tab to proceed with setting the SMTP server authentication.
Configuring Outbound Security
You can configure the SMTP virtual server to provide the authentication credentials that the receiving server needs. The three methods of authentication are:
· Anonymous access: If you use this option, an account name or password is not required.
· Basic authentication: If you use this option, the account name and password of the server that you are connecting to are sent as clear text.
· Integrated Windows Authentication: If you use this option, a Windows account name and password are required.
To Set Basic Authentication for Outbound Messages
1. Start IIS Manager or open the IIS snap-in.
2. Expand Server_name, where Server_name is the name of the server.
3. Right-click the SMTP virtual server that you want (for example, Default SMTP Virtual Server), and then click Properties.
4. Click the Delivery tab, and then click Outbound Security.
5. Click Basic authentication.
6. In the User name and Password boxes, type the account name and password that grants you access to the computer that you are connecting to.
7. Click OK two times.
8. Quit IIS Manager or close the IIS snap-in.
To Set Integrated Windows Authentication for Outbound Messages
Integrated Windows Authentication requires a Windows account name and password. To create these elements, follow these steps:
1. Start IIS Manager or open the IIS snap-in.
2. Expand Server_name, where Server_name is the name of the server.
3. Right-click the SMTP virtual server that you want (for example, Default SMTP Virtual Server), and then click Properties.
4. Click the Delivery tab, and then click Outbound Security.
5. Click Integrated Windows Authentication.
6. In the Account and Password boxes, type the Windows account name and password that grants you access to the computer that you are connecting to.
7. Click OK two times.
8. Quit IIS Manager or close the IIS snap-in.
After the local SMTP server is configured you will enter the local SMTP server in the Reporting Configuration Manager within ION/SPM/PME.
Messages from ION/SPM/PME will be routed through the local SMTP server to the desired SMTP server with the appropriate credentials.
