Issue:
Can I use a 5KVA or larger rated APC Step down transformer with my smaller KVA rated 208 UPS?
Product Line:
APC Stepdown Transformers - All Serial numbers
Resolution:
We at APC by Schneider Electric recommend that the right sized Transformer (XFMR) is used on a UPS however, there are some cases where a customer would choose to down size their UPS and retain their existing XFMR.
In scenarios similar to this, we can allow an XFMR to a smaller sized UPS provided we observe the following:
- The stepdown input specifications is readily available on the target UPS.
SRT3000XLT has an L6-30R meaning an SRT5KTF, SURT003, AP9626 and the like would work.
SRT8KRMXLT or the SRT6KXLT has hardwired, meaning an APTF10KW01, SRT10KRMTF, and the like will work.
- We at APC by Schneider Electric do not recommend putting a plug on a hardwire XFMR OR cutting the input cord on a NEMA plugged XFMR.
- The stepdown will rely on the CAPACITY OF THE UPS meaning if the UPS is rated 3KVA, then the XFMR will have the same capacity regardless of its rating, This means that overloads will be experienced if this is not observed.
- We need to select the right Stepdown Vac depending for the UPS. You can never use a 208 to 120 (1.73 : 1) stepdown on a 230 UPS nor can an end user use a standard 208 Stepdown to isolate voltages from a 230 3 Phase source.
