File Download from Geo SCADA to a SCADAPack x70 controller

The Geo SCADA DNP3 driver provides functionality to allow files (I.E. log file, .txt file) to be downloaded from the Geo SCADA server to a SCADAPack x70 outstation.

This article provides the steps to use for configuring this functionality using the two available variations.

File Location on the Geo SCADA Server

Refer to the following section in the ViewX Help:

Driver Reference | DNP3 Driver | Using DNP3 Specific Actions | List of DNP3 Specific Actions | Download File

As stated in the screen shot below, the location of the file (on the Geo SCADA Server, to be downloaded to the SCADAPack x70 outstation) is defined in the 'Server Configuration' tool.

(Note: this step is used by the Revised g70 Variations method only.  It is not used by the Legacy g70v1 variation method.  Both methods are described below)

To view this location, open the Geo SCADA 'Server Configuration' tool and navigate to the following dialog:

Global Parameters | DNP3 Master dialog

The file location is shown, highlighed in the screen shot below:

Download using 'Legacy g70v1' variation

To use the Legacy g70v1 method, you need to create a ClearSCADADB folder on the C:\ drive, save the file (you wish to download to the x70 controller) there, and give the folder read/write access.

In ViewX, right-click on the DNP3 outstation, select 'Download file' and then enter the name of the file:

The Event List (for the outstation) will show the status of the download and Putty can be used to check and ensure that the file is present in the controller:

(In this example, Putty is connected to the x70 controller via Ethernet at the IP address shown below.)

Download using 'Revised g70 Variations' variation

To use the Revised g70 Variations method, you need to create a new folder on the C:\ drive (as per the server configuration tool and ViewX help - see File Location on the Geo SCADA Server at the top of this email), save the file (you wish to download to the x70 controller) there, and give the folder read/write access.

Right-click on the DNP3 outstation, select 'Download file' and then enter the name of the file, relative to the folder path

(I.E. if the file is in the 'master' folder, enter \filename. If there is a sub-folder, enter \sub folder\filename.)

For the 'Destination Filename', enter the folder on the x70 controller that the file is to be downloaded to.  To put it on the root of the x70 file base, enter /user\filename, where filename is the name that the file will be saved as on the x70 controller.

The Event List (for the outstation) will show the status of the download and Putty can be used to check and ensure that the file is present in the controller:

Summary

Follow the steps as described in the ViewX Help here:

ViewX Help | Driver Reference | DNP3 Driver | Using DNP3 Specific Actions | List of DNP3 Specific Actions | Download File

Caveats to be aware of:

  • if the 'Legacy g70v1' variation is selected (outstation object), then, as per the instructions, the user must create the folder C:\ClearSCADADB
  • The Windows user must have read/write access to the ClearSCADADB folder
  • The file to be downloaded to the x70 controller must reside in the ClearSCADADB folder
  • When entering the 'Source Filename' (after selecting 'Download File' on the Outstation), enter the name as is (I.E. filename.txt)

  • if the 'Revised 'g70 Variations' variation is selected, the user must create the folder as shown in the server configuration | Global Parameters | DNP3 Master dialog
  • The Windows user must have read/write access to this folder
  • The file to be downloaded to the x70 controller must reside in this folder
  • When entering the Source Filename, enter the name as is (I.E. filename.txt)
  • When entering the Destination Filename, enter as follows: /user\filename.txt
