ETE - Knowledge - Sensor: Steel-Wire Armoured Power Cable Option

Steel Cable

Manufacture Time: Approximately 30 minutes per cable.

Parts List:

  • Reel of Multicore Cable, SY Flex Armoured Control, YSLYSY, VDE, Screened, 3 Core, 0.75 mm², 50m
  • T4110002051-000 Sensor Connector, 5 Pole, M12, Female, Screw Socket
  • Cable Tie, 150 mm, 3.6 mm Width, Black Nylon

Instructions:

1. Measure and cut 10 m of cable from the reel of armoured cable.

2. Neatly coil the 10 m section of cable, rotating the cable when necessary, to avoid kinks. Secure the coils with a cable tie.

Secure Coil

3. Select one end of the armoured cable for mounting the M12 connector. Strip the clear plastic outer-insulation, armour and grey inner-insulation back by 18mm. Note: when stripping back the insulation and armour, take care not to cut into the insulation of the inner conductors.

4. Cut the green/yellow wire off level with the stripped-back armour and insulation.

Trim wire

5. Remove the M12 connector from its packaging and disassemble it. Slide the four components of the M12 onto the end of the cable that has had the insulation removed.

M12

6. Strip back the insulation on the brown and blue wires by

7. Take the head of the M12 connector and loosen the grub screw in Positions 1 and 3. Check that the screws in the other Positions; 2, 4 and 5 are tight.

8. Place the brown wire into Position 1 in the M12 connection and the blue wire into Position 3. Tighten the grub screws, ensuring that the screws have tightened on the bare copper and not on the wire insulation.

M12 Connection

9. Slide the four components of the M12 connector up the cable. The white plastic clamp should slide over the rubber seal and both should be pushed up into the connector housing. Screw the head of the M12 connector into the connector housing, then screw the hexagonal component into the bottom of the connector. Note: only turn the black fitting on the bottom of the M12 head and the hex component when assembling the connector. If the connector housing is rotated, the wires will be twisted and may be pulled from their terminals.

10. Using a light spanner, tighten the hex component at the end of the M12 connector.

Tighten M12

11. At the unterminated end of the cable, strip the clear plastic outer insulation by 20 mm, leaving the armour intact.

12. Unbraid the armour and twist the strands together to form an additional conductor. Customers may ground the cable via this conductor if required.

13. Strip back the grey inner-insulation by 20 mm and cut off the green/yellow wire. Leave the brown and blue wires intact and unstripped.

Wire Stripping

14. The cable is complete. Using a multi-meter, conduct a continuity check of the cable end-to-end to ensure the connections are correct and there are no shorts within the M12 connector housing.

POST ASSEMBLY CHECKS:

  • Is the M12 connector housing firmly tightened?

  • Is the hex connector firmly tightened?

  • Does the unterminated end of the cable have brown and blue wires exposed (insulated but not stripped back)?

  • Is the steel-wire armour neatly twisted to form a third conductor?

  • Was the continuity of the test successful?
