What is the difference between open transition and closed transition when selecting a Wye-Delta Reduced Voltage type starter?
Issue:
Identifying what kind of starter is needed for a particular application

Product Line:
NEMA and Definite Purpose Contactors and Starters

Environment:
Reduced Voltage starter

Resolution:
Open transition is best for high inertial loads and closed transition is best for frictional type loads. An open transition starter will disconnect the motor from the line at the time of transition. The closed transition uses an additional contactor and power resistors so that the motor is never disconnected from power during starting.
