What does ampere interrupting rating mean for a circuit breaker?

Issue:
Define Ampere Interrupting Rating on a Circuit Breaker

Product Line:
Miniature and Molded Case Circuit Breakers

Resolution:
Interrupting rating: the highest current at rated voltage that a circuit breaker is intended to interrupt under standard test conditions. When the circuit breaker can be used at more than one voltage, the interrupting rating for each level is labeled on the circuit breaker. The interrupting rating of a circuit breaker must be equal to or greater than the available short circuit current at the point at which the circuit breaker is applied on the system.
