Oil Filled - Most widely used outdoors, least vulnerable to effects of voltage surges, smallest in dimension, heaviest in weight, lowest first cost (about 60% of price of Cast Coil and about 70% of price of Dry Type), oil containment needed, generally considered durable, coils surrounded by oil and not exposed to ambient air, 25 to 30 years life expectancy*.
Cast Coil - more durable than dry type, highest first cost, components exposed to ambient air and require more inspections and maintenance than oil filled type, no oil containment needed, life expectancy 20 years*.
Dry Type - moderate durability, price in middle of 3 types, lightest weight, parts exposed to ambient air and coils susceptible to moisture and environmental contaminants, more inspections and maintenance needed than oil filled type, no oil containment needed, life expectancy 15 to 20 years*.
