In this study, we explore the electrification potential of the European Union. We find that, by focusing on key sectors where electrification is both technologically feasible and attractive, the share of electricity in the overall energy mix could jump from around 20% to 50%. As this transformation happens, the supply of natural gas and oil would drop by around 50%, significantly reducing current energy security concerns, while cutting carbon dioxide emissions by around 1,300 MtCO2/y. The road to a rapid transition to sustainable energy security in Europe is definitely up for grabs.
