Why does Symmetra LX see only half of my installed battery modules?

Issue

Symmetra LX does not see all installed batteries when only one intelligence module is installed.

Product Line

Symmetra LX

Environment

All models, all serial numbers

Cause

In the LX, each Intelligence Module monitors and communicates with half of the batteries. The bottom intelligence module monitors battery bays 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 & 13 while the top intelligence module monitors 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, &12. For this reason, when one of the Intelligence modules is removed, the battery count may decrease depending on which battery slots are populated with battery modules.

Resolution

When an intelligence module is removed, the firmware will delay reporting changed battery module counts for 2 minutes, allowing the new IM time to be installed.  If an intelligence module is removed for longer than 2 minutes, a decrease in the number of installed battery modules may be reported.  This behavior is a result of the design of the Symmetra LX and therefore cannot be changed.  The only solution is to operate the system with two intelligence modules.

Please note that while some battery modules may not be recognized by the system, the user will still receive the proper amount of runtime should the UPS have to operate using its battery supply.
