EM4800 incorrect jumper installation may result in unit damage

Goals and Symptoms

Summary
Manufacturing left a jumper (J2) installed after the testing process. The product is typically sent without this J2 installed. As a result of J2 being installed, internal damage to the product can occur in the following two scenarios.

  • A. If the system that is being monitored is greater than 240 volts

    B. If control power is derived from a separate source than sensed (monitored) voltage

Facts and Changes

Causes and Fixes

Cause

Manufacturing left J2 installed after the testing process. The product in typically sent without J2 installed.

Resolution

Product needs to be sent in for repair if it has been subjected to one of the two scenarios with J2 installed. Tech Support should have the customer call the RMA center and return the product to the factory for analysis. For a replacement have the customer call their local sales contact. Refer to PRB-2453.

Workaround

Please refer to product installation manual for further information on proper configuration of J2.

More Information

J2 is a factory supplied jumper that can be used by the customer to supply control voltage to the EM4800 from the sensed voltage, if it is 240 VAC nominal or less. As a result of J2 being installed, internal damage to the product can occur in one of two scenarios.

    • 1. If the J2 jumper is in position and the voltage being monitored (Sense Voltage) is greater than 240 VAC, then the result is that the EM4800 power supply begins to smoke immediately upon power up after installation.

      2. If Jumper J2 is in position and a separate control power source is attached, then the result is that damage occurs immediately upon power-up due to shorting the A-Phase sensed voltage to the control power voltage source.
