Job Description

By joining the Innovation & Technology department, you’ll step into the technological engine of Schneider Electric. This strategic entity supports the company’s various Lines of Business and plays a key role in accelerating innovation.

It drives technological advancements in critical domains such as advanced materials, smart sensors, precision actuators, and electrical switching systems. The department also oversees product testing laboratories and certification processes, ensuring the reliability, safety, and performance of Schneider Electric’s products in real-world conditions.

At the heart of R&D innovation, you’ll join the Sensors & Actuators team, a group of around fifteen passionate experts who design the mechanisms that allow circuit breakers to react instantly in case of electrical faults. Their expertise spans thermomagnetic and electromagnetic tripping systems — true guardians of energy safety.

You’ll be based in Eybens, on a vibrant R&D site near Grenoble. Discover the site and our activities in this video:

Your Role

As an expert in tripping systems and actuators, you will focus specifically on the bimetal elements of thermomagnetic tripping systems and the coils (solenoids) of electromagnetic actuators. Your role will revolve around three key missions: development project participation, innovation, and knowledge capitalization.

Your Missions

  • Operational Activities
    • Contribute to modification projects involving bimetals/coils, in collaboration with LoB designers. You’ll bring your expertise to challenge designs and flag potential risks.
    • Support quality issue resolution, customer feedback analysis, and rationalization of existing bimetal references.
    • Assist manufacturing plants in improving production reliability through finite element simulation.
  • Innovation
    • Develop innovative concepts in the field of protection (circuit breakers, residual current devices, thermomagnetic tripping systems, electromagnetic actuators).
    • Advance digital and multiphysics modeling (thermal and electromagnetic), and propose experimental validation approaches.
    • Conduct technological and methodological watch on tripping systems and actuators, as well as on emerging risks and trends.
  • Knowledge Capitalization
    • Create and lead an international network of experts and designers across LoBs.
    • Design and deliver training programs on your areas of expertise.

Your Profile

  • Master’s degree in Physics, Energy, or equivalent.
    • PhD in Physics or Thermomagnetism is a plus.
  • Proven experience (+5 years) in modeling physical phenomena related to thermal and electromagnetic domains.

Your Skills

  • Ability to analyze physical phenomena, explain them, and build models to validate hypotheses.
  • Definition of specific test programs: linking prior numerical simulations with experimental validation.
  • Proficiency in finite element simulation tools such as Ansys, Altair Flux, or similar.
  • Proficiency in simulation software like MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape, and programming languages such as Python or equivalent.
  • Fluent English (C1 level) — ability to influence and convince across all organizational levels.
  • Strong communication skills in an international and multicultural environment.
  • Curious, autonomous, and proactive.
  • Additional Skills (Nice to Have)
    • Experience in industrialization of manufacturing processes, especially in optimizing settings to ensure production quality.
    • Solid understanding of electrical protection principles and circuit breaker operation, particularly the physics of thermal and magnetic tripping systems.

We know skills and competencies show up in many ways and can be based on your life experience. If you do not necessarily meet all the requirements that are listed, we still encourage you to apply.
